Tommaso's, formally Lupo's, was started in 1935 by the late Frankie Cantelupo bringing the Pizza of Rome from New Your to the West Coast and San Francisco.
The Crotti Family is still using the original Oak Burning Brick Oven to cook the original and best Pizzas ever.
Agostino and his sister, Carmen see to it that the atmosphere and food is preserved after the tradition of the old Lupo's.
The name Tommaso is the name of the old Chinese cook the early owner took in and taught the specialty of their Pizzas and Specialties from their old Brick Oven. It is the oldest continuous, in use, Brick Oven in America. The aroma of cooking dough in that open hearth oven is part of the excitement and ambience of the old Bohemian flavor. A visit to San Francisco with out a visit to Tommaso's is like a bath with out water.
Herb Caen's favorite place to eat was here in North Beach at Tommaso's. His Favorites were:
Garlic Bread with Asparagus and Zucchini in Vinaigrette, Appetizer;
Coo Coo Clams ( Marinated and Baked); Small Pepperoni Pizza; and Traditional Cannoli for Dessert.
They are serving this special in his memory, celebrating his life and love of the good things in San Francisco.
