August 18, 2005

Dear ?,

This year I have resolved to do something bold,
different, and deeply meaningful. In October, I will
be participating in a very special and powerful event
in the fight against breast cancer. It’s called the
Breast Cancer 3-day. I and thousands of others whose
lives have been touched by breast cancer will walk
sixty miles in three days to raise money to fight this
terrible disease. The net proceeds will support the
combined efforts of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation and National Philanthropic Trust Breast
Cancer Fund.

Breast Cancer first touched my life in the mid 1980’s
when Aunt “Jiggy” was diagnosed with it. Aunt Jiggy
was a warm and lovely person who with her passing left
me with vivid memories of peanut butter and jelly on
toasted English muffins, long walks in the sunshine,
and brisk mornings fishing near San Pablo Bay.

In October of 2004, my friend and teaching assistant,
Consuelo Diaz, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She
considers herself fortunate. Although she endured
surgery and several months of chemotherapy, her cancer
was caught early and she is recovering.

This spring, one of my closest friends, Darline
Klopfenstein, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her
parents and I have supported her through several
batteries of tests, surgery, and months of
chemotherapy. The pain and fears she is facing have
not diminished her courage and her determination to
win this battle. I know that as I walk in the 3-Day,
thoughts of these three women will encourage me and
will inspire me to walk farther than I ever thought I
could.

I have committed to raising $3000 in donations for
this event, so I need your help. Please consider
making a donation. This year, according to the Susan
G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, about 200,000 women
will be diagnosed with breast cancer. About 40,000
will die from this disease. You can help by making a
donation today. All you have to do is mail your
donation along with the enclosed form or visit
www.the3day.org. Click on the “San Diego” walk link,
then on “Sponsor a Participant.” When prompted, type
in my name, “Melissa Israel.” Thank you so much for
supporting me and for helping the thousands of women
battling breast cancer.

Sincerely,
Melissa Israel
